Psychiatry has always been a specialty that interests me. From my undergraduate studies in neuroscience to my gap year working in a mental health unit, I have developed a deep passion for mental health care and advocacy.

Who or what has inspired you while at VCOM?

My peers and the exceptional faculty at SWAG视频have been a constant source of inspiration. Being surrounded by individuals from diverse backgrounds, all united by the common goal of mastering osteopathic medicine, has been a truly enriching experience. The SWAG视频community feels like a family, and it鈥檚 inspiring to witness how everyone supports and uplifts each other, despite the demanding nature of medical school. This sense of camaraderie has been invaluable in helping me navigate the challenges of my journey.

How has the SWAG视频mission inspired you as a medical student?

VCOM's commitment to producing community-focused physicians who are dedicated to serving rural and medically underserved populations was a major factor in my decision to apply. Now, as a student, I see how deeply this mission is woven into our curriculum and experiences. Every aspect of our education emphasizes the osteopathic philosophy, with a strong focus on treating patients holistically and giving back to the community. This mission has been a continual source of inspiration, guiding me toward becoming a physician who not only cares for individuals but also works to improve the broader health of underserved populations.

Who or what inspired you to study medicine?

I lost my grandmother at a young age to an incurable lung disorder, and her passing ignited my curiosity about medicine. This experience fostered a deep passion for contributing to medical advancements and, just as importantly, supporting individuals during difficult times. As my interest grew, I pursued opportunities to expand my understanding of patient care. One of the most impactful experiences was working with mental health patients, which solidified my commitment to studying medicine and becoming an advocate for my patients while working to break down barriers that limit access to healthcare.

Why did you choose VCOM?

VCOM鈥檚 mission and community are the two main reasons I chose to attend here. I am passionate about contributing to efforts that address health professional shortages and the unique challenges faced by rural and underserved communities. Additionally, after visiting the school multiple times, I experienced the strong sense of family that SWAG视频fosters. Seeing a diverse group of individuals united in their commitment to becoming compassionate osteopathic physicians was truly inspiring.

What do you enjoy most about living in the area around your campus?

I attended Virginia Tech for my undergraduate studies, so returning to the community I called home for four years has been an incredible experience. From the breathtaking scenery to the excitement of supporting the Hokies at football games, Blacksburg offers so much to enjoy and explore. Additionally, I love immersing myself in the community by participating in outreach events and giving back to the place that first nurtured my passions as an undergraduate and continues to shape my journey as a medical student.

What do you like to do in your free time?

In my free time, I enjoy playing the piano and working out. I brought my keyboard to school, and learning new songs has become a great creative outlet during the stressful moments of medical school. I also enjoy trying different sports and recently checked out the pickleball courts at Virginia Tech. Another favorite pastime is building Lego sets, it鈥檚 quickly become my go-to activity for study breaks and a fun way to recharge.

Are you interested in a particular practice or specialty once you graduate? What has inspired your interest in this specialty?

Psychiatry has always been a specialty that interests me. From my undergraduate studies in neuroscience to my gap year working in a mental health unit, I have developed a deep passion for mental health care and advocacy. As a mental health technician, I gained invaluable experience working with a diverse group of individuals, including underserved populations such as those experiencing homelessness and individuals from prison systems. I envision myself practicing as a psychiatrist who focuses on serving medically underserved communities. My goal is to help destigmatize mental health and break down the barriers that limit access to care for these vulnerable populations.
