To promote breast cancer awareness, the American Medical Women's Association(AMWA) student org hosted “A Pink Party” at VCOM-Carolinas on November 1. The open house style event provided students with the opportunity to learn about the clinical management of breast health. The event featured a talk from a breast cancer survivor on her experiences as a patient and as an oncology nurse.
Stations were set up that focused on individual aspects of the illness, including clinical breast exam instruction by Lisa Carroll, MD, mammogram guidelines, screening recommendations, and instruction in reading pathology reports by Hannah Coulson, DO. Additionally, there were breast models on which students practiced palpation.
Silent auction items were offered in an effort to raise money for the Mammogram bus of Spartanburg Regional, which provides free mammograms to women in Spartanburg, and a raffle prize was awarded to the winner of a guessing game. Over 40 students attended this educational and engaging breast cancer awareness event.
