Members of the VCOM–Carolinas Class of 2020, along with Matthew D. Cannon, DO and Lisa L. Carroll, MD, met at the Spartanburg Marriott on the evening of Tuesday, May 21 to celebrate induction into the Arnold P. Gold Foundation’s Gold Humanism Honor Society.
Students and faculty were honored to welcome SWAGÊÓƵfounder John G. Rocovich Jr., JD, LLM, Chairman of the Board of Directors. Mr. Rocovich, who traveled to Spartanburg specifically for Tuesday night’s induction ceremony, presented an invocation to begin the proceedings, and later spoke to Society members with pride for their induction in the prestigious organization, expressing his love for education and his conviction in upholding VCOM’s humanitarian mission.
Doctors Cannon and Carroll also spoke to students with words of encouragement and admiration. The two physicians, who had each been inducted into the Gold Humanism Honor Society as medical students, acknowledged the difficulties of the life of a practicing doctor while emphasizing the importance of strong rapport with and empathy for patients. These two doctors and the Class of 2020’s inductees exemplify the spirit of the Society, not only by demonstrating its values in their medical practice and training, but in providing inspiration to other medical professionals to follow their lead.
