Representatives from the South Carolina Department of Health and Environmental Control (DHEC) this week presented a Community Hero award to the Edward Via College of Osteopathic Medicine (VCOM) for its continued efforts to make lifesaving COVID-19 vaccines available in communities throughout the Upstate, especially in rural and underserved areas.

In September 2020, the Virginia Department of Health reported that drug overdoses in Southwest Virginia were up 11% since the start of 2020. The Class of 2024 at the Edward Via College of Osteopathic Medicine-Virginia campus took this information and chose to make a difference by committing to a goal of 100% participation of their class in naloxone training.

The northside community in Spartanburg is home to a new COVID-19 vaccination clinic, the latest community-inspired idea in the state’s ongoing efforts to ensure all South Carolinians have fair and equal access to COVID-19 vaccines.

VCOM-Carolinas Discipline Chair for Preventive Medicine and Public Health Alexis Stoner, PhD, has been awarded a grant from a community foundation in the Spartanburg area for a Vaccination Clinic, providing flu vaccinations to Upstate children on school grounds using the Mobile Medical Unit. This is a one-year project with a $10,000 budget.

The call to help others in need is one that many people hear, especially during a time of crisis, such as the COVID-19 pandemic that is currently sweeping through the world. One such person who is listening to this calling is Tiffany L. Carpenetti, PhD, an Assistant Professor for Anatomical Sciences at the Edward Via College of Osteopathic Medicine (VCOM)-Virginia. With a severe shortage of personal protective equipment (PPE), Dr. Carpenetti was looking for ways to help fellow healthcare workers since they are on the frontlines every day during the COVID-19 pandemic.

Disaster struck residents of rural Lee County, Alabama on Sunday, March 3, as an EF-4 tornado dropped from the clouds at 2:20 p.m. and swept away vehicles, homes and 23 lives.
